Nick DeMoss - Wild West Shootout
7-6-10
Nick DeMoss - Wild West Shootout - (DeMoss Racing) - July 6, 2010 - After a very long 24 hour direct drive to Missoula Montana, the SKE/SUP racing team was ready to be racing in the 2nd Annual Wild West Shootout. This years Wild West Shootout had 37 karts in the open class from all over the country. Nick would draw the number 17 pill which would put him on the outside of row 1 in the first heat.
Nick would get the jump in the first heat and go on to a very convincing first heat race win. Coming in 2nd was Nick’s teammate, Nick Tucker from North Carolina. Nick commented, “Jim Zimmerman at SUP Motors had our engine running flawlessly and the SKE Kart was handling like a dream. I knew Nick (Tucker) would be strong, but he was fighting a brake issue. Its nice to get the first one under our belt and now we have to try for a top 3 in the 2nd heat to put us in the dash.” The field would be completely inverted for the 2nd heat, which would put Nick on the outside of the 3rd row.
Nick would quickly jump into the 2nd place spot and start his charge around the top to catch Montana’s own “Ziggy”. Nick would be able to complete the pass around the high side of turns 1 and 2 and would set sail, taking about a straight away lead. A couple of laps later the crowd would see the number 5 smash into the wall entering turn 3. The crash was a pretty violent hit and would end the race for Nick. When asked about the incident, Nick said, “I was going down the backstretch and was about to set the car into turn 3 when the steering wheel was at my chest. The cotter pin that held the steering shaft broke and I had no control of the wheels. It happened so fast I didn’t have time to even really lift. It broke the right spindle, tie rod, king pin, both left side wheels were ruined, and bent the rear axle. Luckily everything else was in good shape and we were able to get the kart ready for the B-Feature.”
In the B-Feature Nick would have enough points to start on the pole. Nick would open up a large lead until a caution would tighten up the field. Nick was able to jump out to another large lead before another caution would once again tighten up the field. On a later restart Gary Brown would show his nose and even make the pass on Nick. A caution would negate that pass and again the field was tightened up. Going into turn one, Brown would clip the rear of Nick’s kart which turned him sideways, almost ending Nick’s night. Brown quickly got out of the gas which allowed Nick to regain control and a great race would develop. In the end, Nick would pull a few kart lengths on Brown for the B-Main win. When asked about the B-Main, Nick replied, “Our kart was very good anywhere we wanted to run. The guys kept telling me I had a large lead so I wasn’t really pushing it knowing I was in a transfer. My goal was to make sure I didn’t mess up and made it in the show. Gary really surprised me there on the restart when he ducked under me. That made me wake up a little and get back on the wheel. I feel pretty confident we can make a good run in the A-Main, however, there are a lot of really good karts in the field and we start a long way back there.” The win would give Nick the 16th starting spot out of 18 in the A-Feature.
The 25 lap A-Feature would see Nitro Nick Tucker from team SKE/SUP jump out to a commanding lead. In the meantime, Nick (DeMoss) was in the back of the pack, slowly but surely, picking off cars. It didn’t seem to matter where the competition was running as Nick would drive both high and low to pull off passes. After 12 laps, Nick would be in the 6th position. A caution would bunch up the field, putting Nick right in the hunt. On the restart the crowd would see Nick move to the top and start picking off the competition one by one. Another caution a few laps later would again bunch up the field, with Nick in 3rd. Nick again would go to the high side all the way around the track and overtake the 2nd position from Daniel Becker out of California. Nick was in hot pursuit of Tucker until a caution would again fly. On the restart, Nick would challenge Tucker for another lap before falling back a few kart lengths on the white flag lap. As the checker flags flew it was Nitro Nick Tucker taking the win, with Nick coming home in 2nd. After the race Nick commented, “I’m so happy right now for our entire team. To come from the back of the field with the level of competition that comes to this event really makes me feel good. I am glad that SKE/SUP were able to come home in first and second as well. We had a little issue on that last restart with the motor dying coming out of the corner so we will need to look into that to see what is going on. Really that is the least of my worries right now. If you would have told me at the beginning of the race we could come through this field and get 2nd, I would have told you you were crazy! It’s time to go celebrate this with Nick (Tucker) and get ready for our next race back home.”
This is the second year in a row that Nick would come home 2nd at the Wild West Shootout. Nick would find out later the issue with the motor dying was due to a kinked vent line coming off the fuel tank. Nick would like to send out a special thanks to his girlfriend Alicia for all the help getting the kart ready after the crash, as well as, Jim Zimmerman from SUP Motors, Nick Tucker, Kyle Beattie, and Darby DeYarmon from SKE for all of their help this weekend.
